A Month of Real Food School Lunches!

I’ve been sharing my 6 year old son Joshua’s lunches on my facebook page. I’ve received a very positive response and it has been requested that I put all the lunches together.

Here are 4 weeks (20) of his real food school lunches. Most of the time I give him leftovers from the night before. The lunchbox that I use is called a planetbox. Another option is the lunchbots. Both are stainless steel. The planetbox is great! I plan to use it for years to come and it saves on packaging in the long run. Many people have asked how I heat his food up. All of his lunches (including the leftover meats) are packaged with an icepack and served cold. He is use to eating this way and it doesn’t bother him (at least he hasn’t complained at all). If you think about it, we eat deli meats cold. I try to give him a cold dipping sauce as well, when he has leftover meats. Another question I always get asked is why I give him baby carrots (because they are rumored to be soaked in chlorine bleach). First of all, the brand that I give him are literally tumbled carrots (cut from big carrots). They are organic and never soaked in any bleach or ammonia…I even called the company to verify. Here is the snopes report on baby carrots. I am a Mom who wants to feed her kids real food in a culture where real food is not easy to seek out. My hope is that this will help you find your way a bit!

  1. These are GREAT! My youngest daughter was very picky about her school lunches–and she would go without before eating something she didn’t want. Until she was in 5th or 6th grade, she would only take yogurt, cheese sticks, and V8 juice. It made life easy.

  3. I always enjoy seeing new ideas for the planetbox. Thank you for posting your beautiful pictures! I use one for my 6-year-old daughter as well and often delight in how pretty all the colors look when the fruits and veggies are added. My question…I notice in several of your lunches that you pack fresh avocado. Do you add anything to the avocado to prevent discoloration? I tried guacamole in her lunch once and was told that by lunchtime it had turned brown. Avocado is still a favorite so I’d love to get that into her lunchbox.

      Thank you!!! Yes I add either lemon or lime juice and that helps! It adds a nice “tang” too!

      • Thanks! Will have to give that a try. :) I love how you also lay your protein on a bed of spinach. Beyond using spinach in our smoothies and hiding it in sauces, my daughter has yet to acquire a taste for fresh plain spinach but I keep trying. Maybe using it like this will help.

I stumbled across this today on Pinterest n I literally put everything down n immediately went to the mall and bought a Planetbox (PBK had a sale on lunchboxes n I got an incredible deal on the Rover w/a carry bag for $40!!). I have been eating paleo for about 2 months but not my family. I thought I packed healthy lunches for my 7 year old until I saw this! My son has always been a picky eater n we have made great strides in the last year but seeing this made me realize we still have a ways to go. So inspiring! One question, how much of this does your son bring home? My son needs a lot of coaching to clean his plate. If I’m not there, more than half of his food comes back home. Any tips on this?

      thanks! It varies from time to time. Sometimes it is empty and sometimes he leaves a lot. I just stick with healthy choices and if he is hungry he will eat. Whatever he doesn’t finish we always eat so nothing goes to waste.

      • Isn’t it amazing how kids now when they’re hungry and when they’re full? As an adult, I could take a lesson! If it looks good or smells good, I eat regardless!

      Jamie-between $200-$250 depending on what I need. Usually under $200 at Trader Joe’s, but then random things throughout the week.

  11. I was wondering if your little one eats everything cold or how you would heat the meats and roasted potatoes?

  12. Great to see these up again! Wonderfully inspiring!! I can’t believe I’ll pack my first school lunch tomorrow night! It’s frightengly overwhelming, although you make it look so easy. Any tips on getting your little ones to like meat? Grass fed meat with taco seasoning is about the only meat I can get Benji to eat without cringing, besides the occasional cheeseburger. I made steak, avocado and red pepper salad with a side of peaches and realized he only ate red peppers and peaches for dinner! Thanks for all the great ideas!   14. Hi there, i see a lot of avocado packed in these lunches — doesn’t it get brown by the time they get opened them? i always wanted to include avocado but i notice it gets brown quite quickly and my kids wouldn’t go near it if it did! do you do anything special to avoid this? thanks!

      Yes! A splash of lemon or lime juice works. I also sometimes cover it tightly in plastic wrap, even though I know that isn’t ideal.

      • I tried the splash of citrus juice and my daughter wasn’t crazy about it that way so I had to try alternatives. If you happen to have a planet box, try cutting the avocado in half and closing it into the larger round metal container that was included with the box. It keeps the avocado surprisingly green until lunchtime. :)

  16. Thank you for posting this! We also live in upstate NY very close to where you are, and it is wonderful to see this. Our oldest starts school next year and we are planning how we are going to do lunches. This is hugely helpful for us as we are trying to get back to a primal diet.
